118: Educational Interlude – Pirates

Pirates really weren’t very nice people.  Some of them started out as sailors working unofficially for their governments to disrupt commerce for other nations during wartime, but later on decided the government subsidy wasn’t that big of a deal and just started taking ships freelance, as it were.

I think some of the interest lies in the fact that most pirates were rather colorful characters. Blackbeard (he’s the one in the comic) would wade into battle carrying two swords, assorted knives, and a belt full of pistols with burning hemp tied in his hair and beard. That kind of thing leaves an impression. But we probably shouldn’t forget what he did with that impression. I’m certain if the Little Pirate really knew what these guys got up to he’d turn in his pegleg in protest.

Okay, the English teacher in me is coming out and I want to start talking about the unspoken argument of things like the Pirates of the Carribean ride and Treasure Island so I think I’ll let it go at that.

Pirates are a hoot, but you would probably be better off not inviting them over for dinner.

Oh, and don’t ask what the Little Pirate is doing back on the ship. That bit of continuity is completely unrelated.
